The 19th Amendment

The 19th amendment prohibits states and the federal government from denying US citizens the right to vote based on sex. It was adopted on August 8, 1920. It was actually proposed in 1878 by Senator Aaron Sargent, but it took 41 years for Congress to submit it to the states for ratification. In 1922 the amendment was unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court in the case of Leser vs. Garnett, thus solidifying the law.
