Options trading: Open interest

Open interest is the number of options contracts that exist for a stock. When more options contracts are marked "to open", open interest increases. When more of them are marked "to close", open interest decreases. Open interest is useful as a measure of liquidity in the options market. Open interest is a lagging indicator. It is only calculated once per day. It is tracked by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC).
