The past participle is a verb that refers to an action that was started and completed entirely in the past. But it is not simply the past tense of the verb, it is the past tense of the verb plus an auxiliary verb.
Examples:

Sentence: I have helped you with this before.
Verb: walk
Past tense: walked
Past participle: have walked
Sentence: I have walked the entire Appalachian trail.
