Using backgrounds to hold the viewer's eye

Items can be moved into the background or foreground by adding or removing shadows, size, or amount of detail.

A background can help keep the viewer's attention by giving them something to explore.

This isn't limited to paintings. The Mac interface does this too by adding more details to items when they are in the foreground.
