An annular eclipse and a total eclipse are very similar. The difference is that in a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, while in an annular eclipse, the moon is too far from earth to cover the sun completely. That causes an effect known as the "ring of fire", with the moon covering up most of the sun except for the outer edges.
