Weak ties
Weak ties are the ones you see rarely. They are people you only see once or twice year, or people you only know online.
Interestingly, a study found that of those who found a job through a personal connection, the majority of them were through weak ties rather than close friendships. That said, that study was done in the 1970's, before the internet made information easy to come by, so the results might not be the same today. Also, having a lot of weak ties is not enough. They must be people who are willing to share information about new opportunities.
The bottom line is that your professional and social network needs a mixture of connections with breadth and depth.
